When it comes to anxiety, there is really only one question we’re all asking: “how do we get rid of it?” There are lots of solutions.

Different ones work for different people, so it is impossible to say which one is perfect for you.

I will go into alternative and natural therapies only as I am not a doctor and recommend if you have concerns about your mental wellbeing and have tried the below already, it may be time to seek a GP’s advise.

Alternative Options

Meditation

Meditation may be helpful and/or mindfulness (which is a more specific form of meditation) which has a large body of evidence behind it.

Homeopathy

Homeopathy is a gentle and natural healing system that works with the body to relieve symptoms, restore vitality, and improve overall health. (it is a federally recognised form of medicine regulated by the FDA)

Yoga

Many people find it enjoyable as it can take focus from a negative thought to the breath and stretches which results in a much more relaxed state post sessions.

Pilates

Another physical exercise system which as another form of exercise has helped many reduce anxiety and tension within the body.

Massage

There are many forms of massage and it is all about the flow of blood throughout the body and flushing toxins from the system. A gentle flow is recommended and reflexology its self has multiple benefits in overall nervous system outcomes.

Natural Remedies

St John’s wort

This is a herbal remedy you can buy over the counter. It seems to have a positive effect on mild and moderate depression.

Peppermint tea

This contains menthol, which is a natural muscle relaxant. Therefore, the theory is that drinking it will help you relax and feel less stressed. (check with your naturopath or GP if you are pregnant)

Chamomile tea

This may help reduce anxiety and help you sleep better, too.

Green tea

May provide a variety of health benefits and make you feel less stressed.

Lavender

Smelling lavender oil may help reduce anxiety and is side effect free. (it is best to source a high quality certified oil than a cheap one)

Valerian

Valerian root seems to help people sleep better and may or may not improve anxiety but it has been linked to relaxing the body thus can ease tension throughout the body.

Conclusion

Solving anxiety is hard: it’s not like a bacterial infection where there is one antibiotic for everybody. We are all different, and our sources of anxiety are different. Therefore, it may require you to try a lot of different options/treatments before you find what feels right for you.

The good news is that there are so many options aside from alternative and natural options, so you are unlikely to run out. Staying motivated when many treatments have not yet worked for you is difficult, but it is also worth the reward. My tip is to journal what you have been doing and duration so you have notes to reflect on and to share with a practitioner should you seek further guidance.
